A Human-Centered Style of Management

This Posting is inspired from latest observation and the last six-month experiences residing here at THD

In this season of my life, I have come to value something that cannot be measured on a spreadsheet: the way people are treated. Living in an active senior community has reminded me that a place can have excellent accounting, efficient operations, and polished reports, yet still feel cold if the human side of management is neglected. The numbers matter, but they are not the heart of the matter.

What matters most, at least in my experience, is whether people feel seen. Do staff members greet residents with patience and respect? Are concerns heard without defensiveness? Are decisions explained in a way that acknowledges the people affected by them? These may seem like small things, but in daily life they shape the emotional atmosphere of an entire community.

Lately, I have noticed a hopeful shift in our own community. There is a growing awareness that this is not simply a business, but a home for real people living real lives. That understanding changes everything. It creates room for dignity, for better communication, and for a more compassionate style of leadership. When management begins to think this way, the community feels less like an institution and more like a place where people belong.

I find this especially meaningful in a senior community. At this stage of life, many of us are more aware of how much human kindness matters. A respectful tone, a patient explanation, a thoughtful response to a concern, these are not luxuries. They are signs that people still matter, even in systems driven by efficiency and responsibility.

I have long believed that the best organizations are not those that only know how to count people, but those that know how to care for them. Human-centered management does not reject discipline or financial prudence. It simply insists that those things should serve people, not replace them. It understands that trust, loyalty, and morale are not sentimental extras; they are part of what makes a community strong.

That is why I welcome this transition in our community. Our previous management style was cold and emotionally detached. This shifts in management  reflects maturity, wisdom, and a better understanding of what success really means. A place is not truly successful if it runs smoothly on paper but leaves people feeling invisible. The deeper success is when people feel respected, heard, and valued.

In the end, that is what I hope for in any community, and especially in this chapter of my life: not perfection, but decency; not only efficiency, but kindness; not merely management, but genuine care.

Is THD currently managed in a human-centered style? Let me hear from you, fellow THD residents.

Let me end this posting with the following quotes:

  • A community is strongest when it remembers that people are not numbers, but neighbors.

  • Efficiency may keep a place running, but kindness is what makes it feel like home.

  • The best leadership is the kind that never forgets the human being behind the role.

    AI Overview:
Human-centered management is a leadership style that prioritizes people-including employees, customers, and other stakeholders-over traditional business metrics like revenue and efficiency. This approach operates on the belief that when individuals feel valued, supported, and fulfilled, organizational success naturally follows.
    Core Principles
The foundation of this management style is built on several key human-centric behaviors:
    • Empathy and Compassion: Leaders actively listen and seek to understand the unique needs, motivations, and life circumstances of their team members. Experts from Harvard Business Publishing emphasize that this requires a disciplined approach to choosing behaviors appropriate for each individual's context.
    • Psychological Safety: Managers create environments where employees feel safe to share ideas, take risks, and even fail without fear of punishment.
    • Authenticity and Transparency: Leaders lead with purpose and vulnerability, sharing information about company goals and challenges to build mutual trust.
    • Empowerment and Autonomy: Moving away from command-and-control models, managers provide guidance while trusting teams to make their own decisions. Organizations can learn more about these shifts through resources provided by the BRM Institute, which highlights the importance of inspiring clarity about a company's purpose.
    • Key Skills for Human-Centered Leaders
According to IDEO U, human-centered leadership is not a fixed personality but a learnable practice involving six core skills:
    1. Curiosity: Approaching challenges with an open mindset of possibility.
    2. Collaboration: Co-creating strategies rather than giving orders.
    3. Adapting to Ambiguity: Remaining effective in uncertain or rapidly changing environments.
    4. Experimentation: Encouraging a culture of quick prototyping and learning.
    5. Self-Awareness: Understanding how one's own emotions and biases impact others.
    6. Maintaining Momentum: Using storytelling and purpose to sustain focus during difficult periods.
    Benefits for Organizations
Adopting this paradigm shift can lead to significant competitive advantages:
    • Higher Engagement: Employees are 37% more likely to report high engagement when reporting to a human-centric leader.
    • Increased Innovation: Inclusive environments tap into the "collective wisdom" of diverse teams, driving creative problem-solving.
    • Resilience: Teams rooted in trust are better equipped to navigate disruptions and burnout.
    • Retention: By addressing well-being and growth, companies attract and keep top talent more effectively. The Institute of Project Management notes that these practices help create "synergistic relationships" where both the individual and the organization benefit
    • Finally, My Quotes of the Day:

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

      Dr. Seuss

“Stay away from people who make you feel like you are hard to love.”

The Healing Power of the Sea- Lumpia Ubod

I often wonder, why I felt good after a swim in our backyard at Chateau Du Mer Beach House in my younger days during our annual winter sojourn in Marinduque, Philippines. The following article fully explained my personal experience why I feel great after swimming in the of ocean of the Amoingon Beach, Boac, Western Marinduque.

Recent scientific evaluations have pointed to ocean immersion as one of the most effective natural methods for regulating the nervous system and absorbing essential minerals. This finding is shifting the perspective of modern wellness, suggesting that blue spaces offer therapeutic benefits that are often more accessible and potent than synthetic alternatives. When the body interacts with the chemical composition of seawater, it undergoes a series of physiological resets that support both physical and mental health. The approach is quickly becoming a cornerstone of environmental medicine for people seeking a natural way to manage stress and mineral deficiencies.
🧠 Balancing the Nervous System
One of the clearest benefits of the ocean is its ability to regulate the nervous system through stimulation of the vagal pathways. Submersion in water, particularly cooler ocean water, triggers the mammalian dive reflex, which slows the heart rate. That shift moves the body from a sympathetic state of fight or flight into a parasympathetic state of rest and recovery. Cortisol levels drop, and the physical symptoms of chronic stress begin to ease almost immediately upon contact with the water.
🔬 The Role of Marine Minerals
The ocean acts as a natural mineral bath containing high concentrations of magnesium, an element involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions. Through thalassotherapy, the skin interacts with these trace minerals, allowing a form of natural replenishment that many people prefer over standard oral supplements. The exact rate of transdermal absorption is still under study, but the effects of sea salt on muscle tension and skin health are well documented. The mineral-rich environment offers a way to support the body's internal balance without synthetic additives.
🧘 Comprehensive Physical Advantages
The physical act of swimming or floating in the sea provides a range of health benefits that work together to improve overall vitality. These advantages come from the combination of water pressure, mineral content, and the coastal environment. Notable benefits include better skin barrier function and hydration from the high saline content, improved mood from inhaling negative ions generated by crashing waves, reduced inflammation and muscle pain from the buoyancy of saltwater, and stimulation of the lymphatic system, which aids natural detoxification.
💡 Embracing Blue Mind Science
Integrating regular ocean visits into a wellness routine can lead to long-term improvements in how the body handles daily stressors. By providing mineral therapy and nervous system grounding at once, the sea acts as a wellness center that is available to everyone. The approach emphasizes environmental connection in maintaining internal harmony. It encourages a shift away from synthetic solutions and back toward the elements that have supported human life for centuries 🐚.

AI OVERVIEW:
Our Backyard -Chateau Du Mer Beach House and David E enjoying the Sea

The ocean offers both mental and physical health benefits through its mineral-rich water, coastal air, and soothing environment.
Physical Benefits
  • Mineral Absorption: Seawater contains high levels of magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sodium. Magnesium is absorbed through the skin, helping relax muscles, support cellular energy, and aid nerve function.
  • Skin Health: Salt water acts as a natural exfoliant, clears excess oils, and magnesium-rich seawater can help soothe skin roughness and inflammation.
  • Low-Impact Movement: The buoyancy of salt water reduces stress on joints, making swimming, walking, and paddleboarding easier ways to build cardiovascular strength.
  • Airways and Breathing: Coastal air carries fine mineral particles and sea mist that can help keep upper airways moist. Breaking waves release negative ions that promote relaxation and clear breathing.
Mental Benefits
  • Stress Reduction: Simply sitting or swimming by the sea lowers cortisol levels, slows the heart rate, and shifts the nervous system out of "fight-or-flight" mode.
  • "Soft Fascination": The rhythmic sound of waves and expansive ocean horizons allow the brain to rest from mental fatigue, a concept explored in coastal wellness and National Geographic research.
  • Mood Enhancement: Time spent near blue spaces helps trigger positive brain waves and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression.

  • Community Perspectives

Opinions differ on the direct medicinal effects of seawater. While many view the ocean as a natural restorative, some users on Quora note that while salt water can help clean minor surface scabs, open wounds exposed to ocean bacteria can sometimes take longer to heal.
Finally, My Photo of the Day: Lumpia Ubod
Lumpiang ubod is a Filipino appetizer of julienned heart of palm and vegetables wrapped in a thin egg crepe. It comes from Silay City in Negros Occidental, where the original version is small, finger-sized and wrapped in wax paper. It can be served fresh or deep-fried. I Learned Something New Today- AI Caricature Photo Creation Capability

The Original Photo of Me at Andaman Thai Restaurant, Walnut Creek, July 17, 2026

ChatGPT has a new Feature and Apps on Photo Creation. Here is the Prompt, the result and detailed analysis. Its FREE! Try it using the prompt above. The Photo is now a Cover Banner Photo in all my Blogs💚.
The Prompt:  Create a caricature of me and my job based on everything you know about me. First, ask me to upload a picture of myself if I have not done so.

Here's The Detailed Analysis of the Above Photo

A Caricature of a Life Well Lived

More Than a Cartoon-A Visual Autobiography

When I first saw this AI-generated caricature, I smiled. At first glance it looks like a colorful cartoon. But after spending several minutes studying every corner of the illustration, I realized it is far more than that. It is a visual autobiography, a symbolic summary of the journey of my life from a young chemistry student in the Philippines to a retired FDA scientist, blogger, grandfather, and lifelong learner.

Artificial Intelligence did not merely draw my face. It attempted to capture my life's story.

The Centerpiece: Not a Retired Man, But a Man Still at Work

The illustration places me at the center, smiling while writing in a notebook. That is significant.

Although I officially retired more than twenty years ago, I have never retired from learning.

Instead of laboratory notebooks, I now write blogs.

Instead of reviewing pharmaceutical products, I now review books, movies, current events, technology, and the fascinating experiences of growing old.

The notebook reminds us that every day is still another page waiting to be written.

The Whiteboard: A Lifetime Condensed into Nine Bullet Points

Behind me is a whiteboard listing the roles I have played:

  • Chemist
  • Teacher
  • Researcher
  • FDA Review Chemist
  • Chemistry Team Leader
  • Mentor
  • Blogger
  • Senior Advocate
  • Lifelong Learner

Those are not simply job titles. They represent different chapters of one continuous journey.

A career may change. A purpose does not.

The Books Tell Another Story

On the bookshelf are volumes labeled:

  • Chemistry
  • Pharmaceutical Science
  • Drug Development
  • Leadership
  • Mentoring

These books symbolize the foundation upon which my career was built.

Science gave me a profession. Leadership gave me responsibility. Mentoring gave me fulfillment.

Looking back, I realize the greatest legacy of a scientist is not simply the research completed but the younger people encouraged along the way.

The Two Computers

One computer proudly displays:

Daily Blog since 2009
2 Million+ Page Views
Readers in 150 Countries

Those numbers are more than statistics. They remind me that retirement did not end my productivity.

Instead, it opened an entirely new career, communicating with readers around the world.

The second laptop displays a world map titled:

A Blog for the World-A Legacy for My Family

That single sentence beautifully captures why I continue writing.

My blogs preserve memories for my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and readers I may never meet.  Words often outlive the people who write them.

Batman and Robin

No one who knows me would be surprised to find Batman and Robin sitting quietly beside me.

My two beloved cats have become faithful companions during my years of solo aging.

Their presence reminds us that companionship does not always require conversation.

Sometimes simply sharing the same room is enough.

The Coffee Mug

The mug reads:

Kidney-Safe Tea & Gratitude

This may be the most touching detail in the illustration.

Living with Stage 4 kidney disease has required discipline and acceptance.

Rather than focusing on limitations, the mug emphasizes gratitude.

That message reflects my outlook on aging.

Health challenges may change our routines, but they need not diminish our appreciation for life.

The Planner

Today's checklist includes:

  • Write Blog
  • Bridge Game
  • Walk
  • Learn Something New
  • Gratitude

I laughed when I saw this. It accurately reflects my daily routine. Notice that "Learn Something New" appears beside "Write Blog."

Learning and writing continue to reinforce each other. At ninety-one, curiosity remains one of life's greatest medicines.

Family Pictures

Photographs of my family occupy a prominent place. That is exactly where they belong.

Professional accomplishments matter. Degrees matter. Awards matter.

But family remains life's greatest achievement. Everything else simply supports it.

The Philippine Flag

A small Philippine flag appears near my birthplace.

Though I became an American citizen many years ago, my Filipino heritage continues to shape my identity.

The illustration quietly acknowledges that one can proudly embrace two cultures without diminishing either.

Places That Defined My Journey

Small photographs depict places important in my life:

  • Iloilo
  • Marinduque
  • Colesville, Maryland

Each represents a different chapter. Iloilo gave me my beginnings.

Marinduque became my second home and place of cherished memories.

Colesville, Maryland represents an important stage of my professional life with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The 49ers Jacket

My San Francisco 49ers jacket may seem like a humorous addition, but it reveals another side of me.

Even scientists enjoy football. Even bloggers have favorite teams.

Life is healthiest when work and play coexist.

The Playing Cards and Mahjong Tiles

Near the notebook are bridge cards and Mahjong tiles. These symbolize much more than hobbies.

They represent social connection, mental exercise, friendly competition, and joyful aging.

Keeping the mind active is every bit as important as keeping the body active.

The Cross

A small crucifix rests quietly on the desk. Nothing in the illustration draws attention to it.

Yet perhaps it is the most important object of all.

Faith has been the quiet companion throughout every stage of my life, from student to scientist, husband, father, grandfather, widower, blogger, and nonagenarian.

It needs no spotlight because it has always been present.

The Central Message

Across the whiteboard appears one sentence:

My Journey. My Purpose.

Those four words summarize the illustration. This caricature is not really about appearance.

It is about identity. Artificial Intelligence examined what I have shared over many conversations and transformed those facts into visual symbols.

It did not simply create a smiling old man. It created a portrait of a life shaped by science, family, curiosity, service, gratitude, faith, and continuous learning.

Final Reflection

As I looked at this illustration, one thought stayed with me. People often ask whether AI will replace human creativity.

After seeing this caricature, I think the better question is whether AI can help us better appreciate our own stories.

A camera captures what we look like. A good caricature exaggerates our features.

But this AI illustration did something unexpected.

It attempted to capture not merely my face, but my life's purpose.

For a ninety-one-year-old blogger who still believes every day offers an opportunity to learn something new, that may be the greatest compliment Artificial Intelligence could have given me.

AI Additional Impressions and Comments on this Posting:

I think it makes an excellent banner💚 because it does something most photographs cannot. A photograph records a single moment in time. This illustration tells the story of an entire lifetime. It invites readers to pause and ask, "Who is this person?" before they even read your first paragraph.

As a cover banner, it quietly communicates many of the themes that have defined your writing over the years:

  • A scientist whose career was devoted to public service.
  • A Filipino-American proud of both his heritage and his adopted country.
  • A family man whose greatest legacy is his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
  • A nonagenarian who continues to learn, write, and embrace new technology.
  • A blogger who has reached readers around the world while remaining grounded in faith, gratitude, and curiosity.

There is a certain symbolism in your choosing an AI-generated illustration as the banner for all of your blogs. For someone who began blogging in 2009 and now writes about AI for readers in more than 150 countries, it represents your willingness to keep evolving rather than simply looking back. It says, "At ninety-one, I am still learning."

I also appreciate the trust you have placed in me over the past months. Together we've explored subjects ranging from science and aging to Filipino culture, history, food, travel, movies, and the daily lives of seniors. Seeing this illustration become the visual identity of your blogs feels like a fitting milestone in that ongoing collaboration.

I hope your readers enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed helping you tell your story. Here's to many more blog posts and many more conversations sparked by that remarkable banner.
